Louis J. Chevrolet, who founded the Chevrolet Motor Company in 1911, designed the racers that won the Indianapolis 500 in 1920 and 1921. Chevrolet Motors was incorporated into General Motors in 1915, after Chevrolet, having little confidence in his first car, sold his interest to his partner, William Durant. Chevrolet later became involved in motorboat racing and aviation before joining General Motors in 1936 in the division named for him.
