Biography
Clovis E. Byers, a West Point graduate (1920), commanded the 32nd Infantry Division in New Guinea during World War II and the X Corps in Korea during that conflict. In between (1944-1948), he was Chief of Staff if the U.S. 8th Army, whose duties included the occupation of Japan. He also commanded the 82nd Airborne Division (1948-1949). He retired as a Lieutenant General from his last post, Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense, in 1959. General Byers' many decorations included the Distinguished Service Cross and two Silver Stars.
