LT. GENERAL GERALD WALTER JOHNSON

Gerald W. Johnson was born July 10,1919, in Owenton, Kentucky. He left college in September 1941 to enter the aviation cadet training program and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in April 1942 with rating of pilot. He was assigned to the 56th Fighter Group at Mitchell Field, New York. After flying P-36's, P-40's, and P-38's for a few months his squadron, 61st, was moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut, and received the first P-47 delivered to a tactical unit.
The 56th Fighter Group arrived in England in early January 1943. Flying the P-47 Thunderbolt, Jerry Johnson became the first ace of the 56th Fighter Group and the second ace of the European Theatre on August 19, 1943. He was assigned to the 356th Fighter Group in November 1943 and flew with them during their first two months of combat. He returned to the 56th Group in January 1944. On March 27, 1944, Major Johnson was shot down by ground fire while strafing a train. His final score, 17 kills, 2 probable, and 3 damaged, all in aerial combat.
After returning to the Zl and attending the Armed Forces Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, he was again assigned to the 56th Fighter Group at Selfridge Field, Michigan, flying P-51 H's. He took the 62nd Fighter Squadron to Ladd Field, Alaska, in December 1946, for three months of operational and environmental testing.
In August 1953 after two TDY tours in Japan, he led the second wave of a 20 aircraft formation of F-84 G's non-stop from Albany, Georgia to Lakenheath, England.
In May 1956 he became the first Commander of the 4080th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing (U-2's). In November 1963 after two headquarters tours he was named Commander of the 95th Strategic Bomb Wing (B-52's) at Biggs Field, Texas. From July 1965 to July 1968 he flew B-58's at Grissom and Little Rock Air Force Bases.
In September 1971 in assumed command of the 8th Air Force with headquarters at Anderson Air Force Base, Guam.He retired from his last assignment as Inspector General of the Air Force in September 1974 in the grade of Lieutenant General.
