Macon B. Allen had been elected Judge of the Inferior Court of Charleston in November 1872. The first licensed Black attorney, he had been admitted to the bar in Boston (1845) and later became the first Black Justice of the Peace. Allen had moved to Charleston, South Carolina during the Civil War, believing that his legal skills could be more useful there.
