Alexander Dyer (1815-1874) was an American soldier who fought in the Amercian Civil War, among other wars. Dyer graduated from West Point in 1937 and served in the Seminole Wars from 1837 to 1838. He then served as lieutenant of ordnance in the Mexican-American War from 1846 to 1848. He was breveted a captain at the Battle of Santa Cruz de Rosales in that war. Dyer commanded the Springfield Armory from 1861 to 1864 and, on Sept. 12, 1864, was made brigadier general - breveted major general in 1865 - and chief of ordnance in Washington, DC. Dyer held this position until he died.
