Alfred Pleasanton (1824-1897) served in the Mexican War and was brevetted 1st Lieutenant for "gallant and meritorious conduct in the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma". He was on frontier duty in the 1850s during campaigns against the Sioux and the Seminoles. He commanded the Union Cavalry Corps during the Gettysburg campaign (1863), rising to the rank of brevet Major General in 1865. After the war, he resigned from the army in a seniority dispute and occupied minor posts in the federal government until his retirement (1888).
