Biography
Andrew Hero, Jr. (1868-1942) was the son of a Confederate artillery officer wounded at Antietam and Petersburg. The son also specialized in artillery, though in a blue uniform, serving as aide-de-camp to General Joseph Sanger in the Philippines (1899) and editor of the Journal of US Artillery (1902-1907). He served with the American Expeditionary Force in France during World War I, first with the artillery and then at AEF General Headquarters. From 1926 to 1930 he was in charge of US coastal artillery, retiring as a major general in the latter year. His son, Andrew Hero III, a third generation army officer, died on active duty in World War II.
