FRANK WHEATON (1833-1903) was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel of the Second Rhode Island Volunteers in July, 1861, became Colonel in the same month and took part in the Battle of Bull Run. He also served in the principal engagements of the Army of the Potomac, including the Peninsula and Maryland campaigns. Wheaton distinguished himself in the operations in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 and those that culminated in the surrender at Appomattox in 1865.
