George G. Meade (1815-1872) was one of the Army's leading topographical engineers before the outbreak of the American Civil War. During the War, Meade was a strong field commander. He led Union troops in both the Shenandoah and Peninsular campaigns of 1862 and pursued the retreating Robert E. Lee following Antietam. In June 1863, he was given command of the Army of the Potomac. Five days later, he led the troops that repulsed the Confederate attack at Gettysburg.
