George Washington Getty (1819-1901), West Point Class of 1840, was brevetted to captain for gallantry in the Battles of Contreras and Churubusco during the Mexican War. He fought in Florida during the Seminole Wars. Getty fought in most of the major battles of the Eastern Theater of the Civil War, commanding four artillery batteries at Antietam, leading a division at Fredericksburg, and wounded during the Battle of the Wilderness. Forces under his command made the breakthrough at Petersburg (April 2, 1865) which forced Confederate General Lee to abandon Richmond and then to surrender at Appomattox. Brevetted Major General at war's end, he reverted to the rank of colonel in the regular army, and took command of the 3rd Artillery on December 31, 1870.
