Biography
Hamilton Smith Hawkins (1834-1910) graduated from West Point in 1855. At the outset of the Civil War, he was serving as a quartermaster at Fort Columbus, in New York Harbor. Fort Columbus, adjacent to the New York Arsenal, was a disbursement point for military supplies and equipment during the Civil War.
