Biography
A Confederate Major General and senior Cavalry General of the Confederate Armies, Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906, born near Augusta, Georgia), by his own account, fought in 400 battles, was wounded three times and had 16 horses shot out from under him. After the war, he lived in New Orleans for two years before settling in Wheeler, Alabama, named in his honor. There, he practiced law and engaged in cotton planting before representing his adopted state as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives (1881-1882, 1883, 1885-1900). He later served as Major General of Volunteers in the Spanish American War and was the Commander at the Battle of Las Guasimas, Cuba, the first United States Army victory on foreign soil.
