Biography
Confederate General MARTIN LUTHER SMITH (1819-1866), a graduate of West Point, was Chief Engineer of the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of Tennessee. Smith constructed the fortifications at Vicksburg and commanded forces in defense of the city. Captured and paroled, he later constructed the defenses of Mobile.
