Biography | show moreshow less
Randolph Barnes Marcy (1812-1887) was a veteran of the Black Hawk and Mexican Wars, and of the expedition against Mormon Utah in 1857. He was chief of staff for his son-in-law, General George McClellan, early in the Civil War, and later became one of the Union Army's four Inspectors General. His most important contribution to his country was not purely military, however. In 1859, the US Government published his comprehensive book, The Prairie Traveler: a Handbook for Overland Expeditions. This book, replete with maps and illustrations, was a reliable guide to settlers journeying West. Based on survival techniques he had learned first hand, Marcy's book covered everything from wagon maintenance, to route planning to reading Indian smoke signals. He certainly saved the lives of many pioneers.
