Biography
Manton Marble was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on November 16, 1835 and was an American journalist.
At 20 years old he graduated from the University of Rochester in 1855. In 1858, he moved to New York City and began working for the New York Evening Post. In 1860, Marble became the proprietor and editor of The New York World and turned it into a free-trade Democratic newspaper. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln had Marble arrested and placed the paper under military guard because The New York World published forged communications from President Lincoln. Marble resumed publication three days later. Marble retired from his editorial position in 1876.
