Margaret Whiting was an American popular music and country singer renowned for her sultry, rich voice, and distinct interpretation of traditional pop standards. Born on July 22, 1924, in Detroit, Michigan, Whiting came from a musical family. Her father, Richard Whiting, was a successful songwriter, which exposed her to the world of music from a young age.

Whiting’s professional singing career began in the early 1940s when she signed with Johnny Mercer’s Capitol Records. She quickly garnered fame with hits such as "That Old Black Magic" and "Moonlight in Vermont". In the ensuing years, Whiting remained a constant presence on the radio and charts, delivering a series of successful albums and singles. In the mid-1950s, Whiting transitioned to television with "Those Whiting Girls" on NBC starring Margaret and her sister Barbara. She was also a frequent guest on variety shows and talk shows, further expanding her popularity. Whiting’s career underwent a resurgence in the 1970s and 1980s when she became a cabaret star. She performed in many esteemed venues, including Carnegie Hall and the White House, captivating audiences with her blend of nostalgic hits and contemporary classics.
