MARK HELLINGER
Born: March 21, 1903 in New York City, New York
Died: December 21, 1947 in Hollywood, California
Mark Hellinger (March 21, 1903 – December 21, 1947) was an American journalist, theatre critic, and film producer. Born in New York City, Hellinger's influence extended across multiple aspects of entertainment, leaving an indelible mark on both Broadway and Hollywood.
Starting his career as a cub reporter for the New York Daily News in the early 1920s, Hellinger's distinct writing style quickly garnered attention. By the mid-1920s, he had transitioned into covering the theatre beat, where his insightful reviews and columns became a staple for Broadway enthusiasts.
Hellinger's transition from journalism to film production came in the 1930s when he moved to Hollywood. There, he initially worked as a screenwriter, contributing to films like "The Roaring Twenties" (1939). However, it was in the 1940s that Hellinger found significant success as a producer. One of his most notable achievements was producing the film noir classic "The Naked City" (1948), which was posthumously released and lauded for its on-location New York City shots and semi-documentary style. Another memorable production was "Brute Force" (1947), a prison drama starring Burt Lancaster.
In recognition of his significant contributions to the film industry, the Mark Hellinger Theatre on Broadway was named in his honor in 1949, though it later became the Times Square Church in the 1990s.
