Martin Henry Balsam (November 4, 1919 – February 13, 1996) was an American actor who had a prolific career spanning over five decades in film, television, and theater. Balsam was born in The Bronx, New York City, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II before beginning his acting career.
Balsam's breakthrough came with his role in the original Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in 1955. However, it was his work in film that truly cemented his reputation as a talented character actor. He starred in several noteworthy films including "On the Waterfront" (1954), "12 Angry Men" (1957), "Psycho" (1960), and "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961). He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Arnold Burns in "A Thousand Clowns" (1965). His other memorable roles include portraying private investigator Milton Arbogast in Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and juror #1 in Sidney Lumet's "12 Angry Men".
