By her retirement after the 1994 season, MARTINA NAVRATILOVA had won 18 singles titles in Grand Slam events: a record nine at Wimbledon (1978, 1979, 1982-1987 and 1990), four U.S. Opens (1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987), three Australian Opens (1981, 1983 and 1985), two French Opens (1982 and 1984) and 31 Grand Slam doubles titles. In 1984, she won a record 74 straight singles matches.
