Biography
Matheson Lang (1879-1948, born in Montréal, Quebec, Canada) was an English actor and playwright. He began his career as a Shakespearean actor in 1897 and gave highly regarded performances in the male lead roles of Othello and Romeo and Juliet, both in London. He made his film debut in 1916's The Merchant of Venice as Shylock and would go on to appear in films 1936's The Cardinal. His credits include Guy Fawkes (1923, starring role), The King's Highway (1927), The Triumph of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1928), Drake of England (1935, starring role) and Royal Cavalcade (1935). Lang also wrote the play on which the 1940 film, The Chinese Bungalow, was based as well as another play, Sirocco, which was the basis for two film versions of Carnival (1921 and 1931).
