Matt Snell, born on August 18, 1941, in Garfield, Georgia, is a former professional American football player best known for his tenure with the New York Jets in the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL). As a fullback, Snell's prowess on the field and his significant contributions to the Jets are emblematic of the era in which he played.
After attending Ohio State University, where he excelled in football and earned All-Big Ten honors, Snell was drafted by the New York Jets in the 1964 AFL Draft as the third overall pick. He made an immediate impact in his rookie season, rushing for 948 yards and earning AFL Rookie of the Year honors. One of Snell's most noteworthy achievements came during Super Bowl III in 1969. In what is considered one of the greatest upsets in sports history, Snell played a pivotal role in the Jets' victory over the heavily favored Baltimore Colts. He scored the only touchdown for the Jets and rushed for 121 yards on 30 carries, setting a then-Super Bowl record.
