MELISSA ETHERIDGE
Born: May 29, 1961 in Leavenworth, Kansas
Etheridge (born in 1962) is an Award-winning rock singer and guitarist recognized for her raspy voice, raw love songs and intense guitar playing. The L.A.-based singer/songwriter has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide and is best known for international radio hits like "Bring Me Some Water", "I'm The Only One," "I Want to Come Over" and "Come To My Window". In 2004 Etheridge was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and underwent strenuous chemotherapy. The next year at the 2005 Grammy Awards still undergoing treatment, she performed a tribute to Janis Joplin and was praised for her performance and bravery. Etheridge has also been an iconic gay and lesbian activist since her public coming out in 1993. In 2008 responding to the passing of California's Proposition 8 (banning same-sex marriage) she announced that she would not pay her state taxes as an act of civil disobedience. Etheridge was finally honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011.
