MICKEY VERNON
Born: April 22, 1918 in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania
Died: September 24, 2008 in Media, Pennsylvania
Mickey Vernon (April 22, 1918 – September 24, 2008) was an American Major League Baseball (MLB) first baseman whose career spanned 20 seasons from 1939 to 1960. Born in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, Vernon played the majority of his career for the Washington Senators, with additional stints with the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Braves, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
A notable left-handed hitter, Vernon won two American League (AL) batting titles, his first in 1946 with a batting average of .353 and his second in 1953 with a .337 average. He was named to seven All-Star teams, in 1946, 1948, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, and 1957, attesting to his consistent performance at the plate and his prowess as a first baseman. In total, Vernon amassed 2,495 hits, 131 home runs, and 1,311 RBIs in his MLB career, with a lifetime batting average of .286.
One of Vernon's most significant achievements came during the 1960 season, when he was a player-coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Although he played in just nine games that year, he was a part of the team that won the World Series in a dramatic seven-game series against the New York Yankees, highlighted by Bill Mazeroski’s legendary walk-off home run.
After retiring as a player, Vernon transitioned to coaching and managed the expansion Washington Senators from 1961 to 1963, leading the team in its first years after the original Senators relocated to Minnesota and became the Twins. After his managerial stint, Vernon continued to work in various capacities within baseball, including serving as a scout and a hitting instructor for several MLB teams.
