MIKE WALLACE
Born: May 09, 1918 in Brookline, Massachusetts
Died: April 07, 2012 in New Canaan, Connecticut
Myron Leon "Mike" Wallace (May 9, 1918 – April 7, 2012) was an iconic American journalist, best known for his hard-hitting interviews as a long-time correspondent for CBS's "60 Minutes." His relentless interviewing style reshaped television news, making him one of the most influential figures in broadcast journalism.
Wallace's journalism career began as a radio news writer for the Chicago Sun and later as a reporter for CBS Radio. However, he gained prominence in the 1950s and '60s as the host of several television programs, including "Night Beat" and "The Mike Wallace Interview," noted for their probing, aggressive questioning of guests. In 1968, Wallace became a correspondent for "60 Minutes," a position he held for nearly four decades. His in-depth and confrontational interviewing style became a defining characteristic of the show. Notable interviews conducted by Wallace include those with personalities such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Vladimir Putin, and Ayatollah Khomeini. Wallace won numerous awards throughout his career, including 21 Emmy Awards, three Peabody Awards, and the Paul White Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association.
