NAT KING COLE
Born: March 17, 1919 in Montgomery, Alabama
Died: February 15, 1965 in Santa Monica, California
Nat King Cole was born on March 17, 1919, in Montgomery, Alabama and he was an American jazz pianist and vocalist
Raised in Chicago, Cole began classical piano lessons at the age of four and was performing publicly by the age of twelve. He left school in his teens to pursue a career in music. In the late 1930s, Cole formed the King Cole Trio, which featured piano, guitar, and bass, a format that helped define small jazz ensemble standards. The group’s success led to a recording contract with Capitol Records, with which Cole remained for the rest of his career. Although initially known for his piano playing, Cole shifted focus to his vocal work in the late 1940s. He released numerous successful records during this period, including “Mona Lisa” (1950), “Too Young” (1951), and “Unforgettable” (1951). His interpretations of ballads and romantic standards established him as a central figure in American popular music.
In 1956, Cole became the first African American to host a nationally televised variety show, The Nat King Cole Show, which aired on NBC. Despite critical praise, the show ended in 1957 due to a lack of national sponsorship, which was attributed to racial barriers in advertising.
Cole was also active in film, appearing in movies such as St. Louis Blues (1958) and Cat Ballou (1965). Throughout his career, he faced racial discrimination both on and off stage, and he was involved in civil rights causes, including public statements and fundraising efforts.
