Edward "Ned" Wertimer (October 27, 1923 – January 2, 2013) was an American character actor best known for his recurring role as Ralph the Doorman on the popular television sitcom "The Jeffersons." Born in Buffalo, New York, Wertimer's acting career spanned several decades, with appearances in numerous television shows and films.
After serving as a pilot in World War II, Wertimer earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He then decided to pursue an acting career, a decision that led him to significant success in the entertainment industry.
Wertimer started his acting career on Broadway, performing in various productions before transitioning to television. Over the years, he made guest appearances in a myriad of television series, including "Gunsmoke," "McMillan & Wife," and "Mork & Mindy." However, it was his portrayal of Ralph Hart, the money-hungry doorman in "The Jeffersons," that remains his most recognized and enduring role. He reprised this character for more than a decade, appearing in over 50 episodes between 1975 and 1985.
In addition to his work in television, Wertimer appeared in several films. His roles included supporting parts in features such as "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" and "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians."
