Nelson Kelley Briles, born on August 5, 1943, in Dorris, California, was an American Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher. Over his 14-year professional career, Briles emerged as a consistent and reliable player, representing several teams and achieving notable successes on the mound.
Briles began his MLB career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1965. His tenure with the Cardinals was marked by several significant achievements, including being a part of the team that won the World Series in 1967. In that series, Briles was particularly impressive, pitching a complete game shutout in Game 3, helping to secure the Cardinals' championship victory. Following his stint with the Cardinals, Briles went on to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates. His time with the Pirates further solidified his reputation, and he was instrumental in the team's World Series win in 1971. Briles also had playing stints with the Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, and Baltimore Orioles. Over his MLB career, he amassed a record of 129 wins and 112 losses, with a commendable earned run average (ERA).
