NORMA SHEARER
Born: August 10, 1902 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Died: June 12, 1983 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California
Norma Shearer born on August 10, 1902, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and she was a Canadian-American actress.
Shearer began her acting career in silent films after relocating to New York City in the early 1920s. She signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and quickly became one of the studio’s most prominent stars. Transitioning successfully to sound films, she gained early acclaim with The Divorcee (1930), which earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Shearer starred in several major MGM productions, including A Free Soul (1931), Strange Interlude (1932), The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934), Romeo and Juliet (1936), and Marie Antoinette (1938). For her work in these films, she received five additional Academy Award nominations. Her final film role was in Her Cardboard Lover (1942), after which she retired from acting.
Shearer was married to MGM production head Irving Thalberg from 1927 until his death in 1936. The couple had two children, and their marriage linked her closely with the inner workings of the studio during Hollywood's Golden Age. After Thalberg’s death, Shearer gradually reduced her film appearances. After retiring from film, she lived a private life in California and declined most offers for a return to the screen.
