NORMAN WISDOM
Born: February 04, 1915 in Marylebone, London, England, United Kingdom
Died: October 04, 2010 in Ballasalla, Isle of Man, United Kingdom
Norman Wisdom, born on February 4, 1915, in Marylebone, London, was an acclaimed English actor, comedian, and singer, best known for his slapstick film roles in the 1950s and 1960s. Often portraying the character "Norman Pitkin", Wisdom became synonymous with the persona of a likable, yet hapless individual, resulting in his recognition as one of the UK's leading comedy film stars of the post-war years.
Wisdom's early films include "Trouble in Store" (1953) which earned him a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles. This success was followed by a string of popular titles such as "One Good Turn" (1955), "The Square Peg" (1958), and "The Early Bird" (1965), in which he invariably played the underdog fighting adversity, with the added mix of romantic subplot and musical interludes. Alongside his film career, Wisdom's talent extended to the stage and music. His song, "Don't Laugh at Me," which he co-wrote, became a hit in 1954, further showcasing his versatility. On television, he starred in "A Little Bit of Wisdom" in the 1970s.
Wisdom's influence was not just limited to the UK. His films were particularly popular in Eastern European countries, where his "little man" persona resonated deeply with audiences, symbolizing the triumph of the ordinary man against the system.
Wisdom was knighted in 2000 for his services to entertainment and charity.
