Biography
Olive Higgins Prouty (1882-1974) wrote two books turned into major films: Stella Dallas (1923, made into a stage and two film versions, the latter starring Barbara Stanwyck); and Now Voyager (1941, a 1942 film starring Bette Davis). Prouty, a philanthropist, was a patron to young poet Sylvia Plath. The character Philomena Guinea in Plath's The Bell Jar (1963), is said to be based on Prouty. A volume of her poetry, Between the Barnacles and the Blueberries, was published posthumously.
