Paul Byrd was born on December 3, 1970 in Louisville, Kentucky and he is a former American professional baseball pitcher who played 14 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB).

Byrd attended Louisiana State University, where he played college baseball for the LSU Tigers. He was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the fourth round of the 1991 MLB Draft and made his major league debut on July 28, 1995, with the New York Mets. Over his career, he became known for his unique old-fashioned pitching style, using a slow delivery and windup reminiscent of early 20th-century pitchers.

During his time in the majors, Byrd played for several teams, including the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and Cleveland Indians. His most productive seasons came in the early 2000s, when he became a reliable starter. In 2002 with the Kansas City Royals, he achieved his only All-Star selection, finishing the year with 17 wins. Byrd contributed to postseason teams later in his career. With the Los Angeles Angels, he pitched in the 2005 American League Division Series, and with the Cleveland Indians, he was part of the 2007 squad that reached the American League Championship Series. His performance in the 2007 AL Division Series against the New York Yankees included a decisive Game 4 victory, helping Cleveland advance.

Throughout his MLB career, Byrd compiled a win–loss record of 109–96, an earned run average (ERA) of 4.41, and 919 strikeouts. He officially retired after the 2009 season. Following retirement, Byrd transitioned into broadcasting, working as a television analyst for Atlanta Braves games on Bally Sports South and Bally Sports Southeast.
