Lavalle studied at the Juilliard School and began his professional career in the 1930s. He played the clarinet in the original NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini, gaining recognition for his instrumental talent. In 1940, Lavalle established himself as a prominent radio conductor when he began serving as the music director for NBC's "Carnegie Hall". He also served as the music director for the radio program "Band of America," further consolidating his reputation. Perhaps his most notable achievement was his appointment in 1955 as the musical director of the Cities Service Band of America, which became known as the "Paul Lavalle's Band of America". Under his leadership, the band achieved great popularity, making numerous records and regularly touring the United States.
In addition to his conducting career, Lavalle was a productive composer and arranger. He composed various works for wind band and was known for his innovative arrangements of traditional tunes, contributing to the development of a uniquely American band sound.
