Paul Laxalt (August 2, 1922 – August 6, 2018) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 22nd Governor of Nevada from 1967 to 1971 and as a U.S. Senator from 1974 to 1987. Born in Reno, Nevada, Laxalt was a prominent figure in Nevada politics and a key ally to President Ronald Reagan on the national stage.
Of Basque descent, Laxalt's early years saw him enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he pursued law, earning a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Denver in 1949. Shortly thereafter, he began his political career, serving as the District Attorney of Ormsby County, Nevada, from 1951 to 1954.
Laxalt's tenure as the Governor of Nevada was marked by significant reform efforts, including the modernization of the state's tax structure and an overhaul of its educational system. His leadership also saw the establishment of Nevada's community college system.
In 1974, Laxalt transitioned to national politics, being elected to the U.S. Senate. There, he quickly became known for his conservative stances and his close working relationship with President Ronald Reagan, with whom he shared a personal friendship. Due to this close association, Laxalt was often referred to as "The First Friend" during the Reagan administration. During his time in the Senate, Laxalt championed issues related to land rights, defense, and foreign policy.
After his retirement from the Senate in 1987, Laxalt returned to his legal roots, practicing law and also serving as a political consultant. In addition, he was involved in various business ventures, including ownership of a hotel-casino in Carson City.
