Paul Signac (1863-1935), who was noted for his landscapes and seascapes, was a leading member of the Neo-Impressionist School notable for a painting technique called Pointillism. Encouraged by Signac, in 1884, Georges Seurat turned away from the brushstrokes of the Impressionists and became the leader of the Pointillist movement. After Seurat's death in 1891, Signac became the acknowledged leader of the Neoimpressionists.
