Noel Paul Stookey was born on December 30, 1937, in Baltimore, Maryland and is an American musician, singer, and songwriter.

Stookey moved to New York City in the late 1950s, where he immersed himself in the burgeoning folk music scene. In 1961, he teamed up with Peter Yarrow and Mary Travers to form Peter, Paul and Mary. The trio quickly became a central part of the 1960s folk revival, producing hits that included interpretations of songs by Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger as well as their own material. Some of their most famous songs include "If I Had a Hammer," "Puff, the Magic Dragon," and "Leaving on a Jet Plane." One of Stookey's most memorable solo contributions is the song "The Wedding Song (There is Love)," which he wrote for Peter Yarrow's wedding. The song became very popular and is still frequently used in weddings today.
