PETER, PAUL & MARY
Biography | show moreshow less
The most popular folksingers of the 1960s, Peter, Paul & Mary - named after bandmembers PETER YARROW, NOEL PAUL STOOKEY and MARY TRAVERS (1937-2009) - have proven themselves to be among the most durable music acts in history. Their first album, Peter, Paul & Mary, was released by Warner Bros. in 1962. Two singles were also released that year: Lemon Tree and If I Had a Hammer. The latter won the trio their first two Grammy Awards, for Best Performance by a Vocal Group and Best Folk Recording. Their 1963 recording of Puff (The Magic Dragon), a song that Yarrow had written in college, rose to number two on the charts and became one of the most beloved children's songs of all time.
