During his early years, Jacobsen attended the University of Oregon, where he played collegiate golf before turning professional in 1976. He quickly rose through the ranks of professional golf, earning his first PGA Tour victory in 1980 at the Buick-Goodwrench Open.

Jacobsen's notable achievements in golf include winning seven PGA Tour events between 1980 and 2003. His victories include the 1984 Buick Classic, the 1995 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, and the 2003 Greater Hartford Open. He also achieved success on the Champions Tour, winning the 2004 U.S. Senior Open and the 2005 Senior Players Championship.
