Biography | show moreshow less
Former vaudeville and burlesque performer Silvers (1911-1985) starred in film comedies from the early 1940s, and he won two Tony Awards on Broadway (for Top Banana (1950) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1971). His biggest success was probably on TV, however, cast as Sergeant Bilko, winner of five Emmys in the sitcom You'll Never Get Rich (1955-1959). As the head NCO of the motor pool at a small Kansas army base, Bilko was constantly scheming to disprove the old adage that "you'll never get rich" in the army.
