Curie (1859-1906) conducted research on piezoelectricity, the magnetic properties of bodies at various temperatures, relations of magnetism, paramagnetism and diamagnetism. Pierre and his wife, Marie Curie, were awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics in Stockholm, Sweden, "in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel". They shared the prize with Becquerel. In 1904, Pierre, who had been on the faculty of the Municipal School of Industrial Physics and Chemistry in Paris since 1882, joined the faculty at the Sorbonne. In 1906, 47-year-old Pierre Curie was killed in a traffic accident and his wife succeeded him at the Sorbonne as Professor of Physics.
