Biography | show moreshow less
Porter Wayne Wagoner (August 12, 1927 – October 28, 2007) was an iconic figure in country music, known for his flashy rhinestone suits and for introducing Dolly Parton to the world. Born in West Plains, Missouri, Wagoner's career spanned more than five decades, beginning with his first contract signing with RCA Records in 1952.

Wagoner established himself as a highly successful country artist, with over 80 singles on the country charts from 1954 to 1983. Among his most notable hits were "Misery Loves Company," which reached No. 1 on the Billboard country charts in 1962, and "Green, Green Grass of Home," another chart-topper from 1965. In 1967, Wagoner invited Dolly Parton to join his popular syndicated television show, "The Porter Wagoner Show", launching a professional partnership that would produce a series of hit duets including "Please Don't Stop Loving Me," which reached No. 1 in 1974. Wagoner was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2002, recognizing his significant contributions to the genre. His final solo album, "Wagonmaster," was released in 2007 to critical acclaim, shortly before his death.
