Biography
General Alfredo Stroessner (1912-2006) rose rapidly in rank during Paraguay's war with Bolivia (the Chaco War, 1932-1935). Named Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces in 1951, he ousted his predecessor in a coup in 1954 and became dictator of Paraguay. Stroessner, who ruled impoverished Paraguay for 35 years until deposed in a coup in 1989, lived the rest of his life in comfortable exile in Brazil.
