Benito Pablo Juarez Garcia (1806-1872) was born to Zapoteca parents from Oaxaca. He has a very humble childhood but thanks to his intelligence he was able to attend law school and eventually became President of Mexico. Juarez served for five terms: 1858-1861 as interim, then 1861-1865, 1865-1867, 1867-1871 and 1871-1872 as Constitutional President. He defended the country against the French occupation and overthrew the Second Mexican Empire, restored the Republic and used liberal measures to modernize the country in a mentally and materially way.
