Biography
FULGENCIO BATISTA y ZALDIVAR (1901-1973) led the coup that deposed provisional Cuban President Carlos de Céspedes y Quesada. His uprising, known as the "Revolt of the Sergeants", overthrew the President's liberal government on September 4, 1933, marking the beginning of the Army's influence on the running of the country's government. As dictator, Batista controlled the government from 1933-1940, when he assumed the title of President of Cuba (1940-1944). Batista retired in 1944, but he returned to power by an army coup in 1952. His regime was overthrown by Fidel Castro in 1959.
