PRESIDENT HERBERT HOOVER
Born: August 10, 1874 in West Branch, Iowa
Died: October 20, 1964 in New York City, New York
Herbert Hoover was born on August 10, 1874, in West Branch, Iowa and was the 31st President of the United States.
Raised in a Quaker family, he was orphaned at the age of nine and later attended Stanford University to study geology. He initially made his mark as a mining engineer and achieved international success, leading to a lucrative career that allowed him to travel extensively.
Before his presidency, Hoover gained widespread acclaim for his humanitarian efforts, notably during World War I, when he led food relief efforts in Europe as head of the U.S. Food Administration. This experience elevated his reputation as a capable administrator and a public servant, which helped him secure the presidency in 1928 as a Republican candidate.
Hoover's presidency, however, was marred by the onset of the Great Depression. Taking office just months before the Wall Street Crash of 1929, his term was dominated by efforts to combat the economic downturn. Despite his extensive efforts to apply his administrative skills to resolve the crisis, including pioneering new federal initiatives such as the Hoover Dam project, his responses were often seen as inadequate by the public. Criticized for not doing enough to directly aid individuals and for his perceived insensitivity to the plight of the ordinary Americans, his popularity plummeted. His approach to the Depression, emphasizing volunteerism and limited government intervention, was overshadowed by the expanding crisis. By the time he left office in 1933, Hoover was widely blamed for the Depression and was defeated in a landslide by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Post-presidency, he remained engaged in public service, contributing to various commissions under Presidents Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
