Biography
Johnson (1908-1973) became the 36th U.S. President (1963-1969) upon the assassination of John F. Kennedy, under whom Johnson had served as Vice President from 1961 to 1963. Johnson had previously served as a U.S. Representative (1937-1949) and U.S. Senator from Texas (1949-1960, resigning upon being elected Vice President). Johnson declined to run for a second term in 1968 due to the escalation of the Vietnam conflict.
