PRINCESS GRACE KELLY (MONACO)
Born: November 12, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Died: September 14, 1982 in La Colle, Monaco
Grace Kelly was born on November 12, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and she was an American film actress who later became Princess of Monaco through marriage.
Kelly began studying acting in New York after completing her education at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She worked as a model and appeared in early television dramas before making her feature film debut in Fourteen Hours (1951). Her first significant screen role was opposite Gary Cooper in High Noon (1952), which brought widespread attention.
In 1953 Kelly signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and appeared in John Ford’s Mogambo (1953), receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The following year she starred in two Alfred Hitchcock films: Dial M for Murder (1954) and Rear Window (1954). She also appeared in The Country Girl (1954), for which she received the Academy Award for Best Actress. Kelly continued working with Hitchcock in To Catch a Thief (1955), co-starring with Cary Grant.
Her final films included The Bridges at Toko-Ri (1955), The Swan (1956), and High Society (1956). Shortly after completing High Society, Kelly ended her acting career following her engagement to Prince Rainier III of Monaco. They were married on April 19, 1956, after which she became Princess Grace of Monaco and assumed various ceremonial, social, and charitable duties within the principality.
As Princess of Monaco, Kelly supported cultural institutions, philanthropic projects, and initiatives related to the arts. She remained an internationally recognized public figure throughout her life. On September 13, 1982, Kelly suffered a stroke while driving in France; she died the following day in Monaco from injuries sustained in the resulting car accident.
