RALPH GARR
Born: December 12, 1945 in Monroe, Louisiana
Ralph Allen Garr (born December 12, 1945) is an American former professional baseball player, recognized for his impactful career in Major League Baseball (MLB). Born in Monroe, Louisiana, Garr gained prominence as an outfielder for the Atlanta Braves, the Chicago White Sox, and the California Angels.
Garr, affectionately known as "Road Runner," started his professional baseball career with the Atlanta Braves in 1968, where he remained until 1975. He earned a reputation as an exceptional batter, leading the National League in hitting in 1974 with a batting average of .353. Garr's exceptional prowess at the plate resulted in an impressive streak of five consecutive seasons (1970-1974), during which he maintained a batting average above .300. In 1975, Garr was traded to the Chicago White Sox. Despite the shift, he continued his brilliant performance, again recording a .300 batting average in his first season with the team. His career with the White Sox spanned three seasons, before he moved to the California Angels in 1979. His MLB career concluded the same year, marking an end to a professional career that spanned more than a decade. Notable for his speed, Garr led the National League in triples in 1971 and 1974. He was also selected for the All-Star game in 1974. His career statistics boast a .306 batting average with 75 home runs, 408 runs batted in, and 172 stolen bases.
Post-retirement, he maintained his ties with baseball, serving as a hitting coach for the Braves in the 1980s and later taking on a role as a scout.
