RAQUEL MELLER
Born: March 10, 1888 in Tarazona, Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain
Died: July 26, 1962 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
Biography
Raquel Meller (1888-1962) was a Spanish diseuse, singer, and vaudeville performer, singing the original versions of "La Violetera" and "El relicario". Coming from an established family in Tarazon, Aragon, Meller was raised by her aunt after the death of her father, running away when faced with the proposition of becoming a nun. Working as a seamstress, she would often sang as she worked, attracting large crowds of people who would stop to hear her sing. Eventually training under Marta Oliver, Meller debuted in 1908, with a grand debut later in 1911. She later went on to star in a number of silent films, including Violettes impériales (1923) and Carmen (1926). Her career continued to be successful for many years, but she eventually retreated from the public eye, only appearing in two films later in her career, both paying tribute to the singer.
