Joseph Raymond "Ray" Conniff (November 6, 1916 – October 12, 2002) was an acclaimed American bandleader and arranger known for his distinctive "Ray Conniff Sound." Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, Conniff's innovative blending of instrumental and vocal harmonies left an indelible mark on the music industry, particularly in the easy listening and pop genres.

Conniff's musical career kicked off when he began arranging for big bands in the 1930s. He joined the Artie Shaw band as a trombonist in the late 1930s, and his work soon garnered attention from various industry professionals. In 1955, he began to work as a contract arranger for Columbia Records, where he crafted arrangements for many of the label's top artists, including Johnnie Ray and Frankie Laine. His breakthrough came in 1956 with the album "'S Wonderful", a collection of standards that introduced the "Ray Conniff Sound," a unique blend of instrumental accompaniment and wordless vocal choruses. The album achieved significant success, setting a precedent for Conniff's future works.

Conniff achieved notable success with the Ray Conniff Singers, a group that was particularly popular during the 1960s and 1970s. Their notable albums include "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" (1962), and their renditions of songs such as "Somewhere My Love (Lara's Theme)" from the film Doctor Zhivago won them widespread recognition.
