Biography
George W. Melville (1841-1912), who had begun his Naval career during the American Civil War, was Chief Engineer of the Jeannette, George W. DeLong's ship in his 1879 Arctic exploration. After the wreck of the ship, Melville led a detachment to safety through Siberia and headed a relief expedition that recovered the bodies of DeLong and his companions. Melville was Chief Engineer on the Thetis of Greely's relief expedition and served as Chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering, U.S. Navy, from 1887-1903, when he retired from the Navy as a Rear Admiral.
